What is Global SEO?

Global SEO is the process of setting up a website so that search engines can easily understand which countries you want to reach with which pages on your site.

How does it work?

SEO for global brands is one of our specialities.  We've developed an expertise at doing multi-language sites as a result of business opportunities but also because our founder was born overseas and has travelled extensively.

Building a multi-language site can be challenging but if done correctly, it will add credibility to your business not only with customers but also with Google. Google will think you're a multi-national and give you lots of credit.

One of the first decision that needs to be made when launching a mult-ilanguage strategy is the domain.  There are three approaches.
  • domains (example: domain.com, domain.fr, domain.de) - This strategy is the easiest for users to understand.  It is also the most expensive since each domain has be registered annually. The largest penalty with this approach is that each site will be considered as independent by Google so they will each need to develop external back-links to grow their Domain Authority score.
  • sub-domains (example:  us.domain.com, fr.domain.com, de.domain.com) - This strategy may be confusing to users but it guarantees that links to each sub-domain will accrue value to all the other sub-domains. It is also has the extra benefit to creating external links since Google considers links from sub-domains as external links.
  • sub-directories (example: www.domain.com/en/, www.domain.com/fr/) - This approach offers the same level of user comprehension as the domain strategy without the extra cost but also without the benefit of external links as seen with subdomains.

A perfect strategy does not exist. Each business is different. Each has different branding requirements and financial resources.

The most important requirement to properly implementing a multi-language site is the proper use of "Hreflang" tags. This special tag tells Google that a page on a site is the same as a page on another site except that they are in different languages. It allows Google to decide which page to present searchers based on language and country of the browser setting and user IP address. It also prevents Google from penalizing the domains for having created duplicate pages.  This is a timely process but highly beneficial.

All brands are global and we challenge all businesses to consider building a site in a different language.  The benefits will accrue for years to come.
